The investigation of marine accidents and incidents (for exceptions please see below) is carried out by the independent Marine Accident and Incident Investigation Committee (MAIC).

Exceptions
Accidents and incidents of the vessels below and concerning the cases below, must be reported to the Shipping Deputy Ministry (see contact details here):

  • Ships not propelled by mechanical means and wooden ships of primitive build;
  • Pleasure yachts and pleasure craft not engaged in trade, unless they are or will be crewed and carrying more than 12 passengers for commercial purposes;
  • Inland waterway vessels operating in inland waterways;
  • Fishing vessels with a length of less than 15 meters;
  • Fixed offshore drilling units;
  • Vessels owned or operated and used only on government non-commercial service.
