Ship Radio Licence
All ships must be furnished with valid Ship Radio Licence in accordance with the Radiocommunications Laws of 2002 until 2016 and the Radiocommunications (General Authorization) Regulations of 2004 until 2012. The validity of a radio licence is one year and can be reissued on written request. Applicable Circular is Circular 50/2004.

The Ship Radio Licence must be also reissued in the following cases :

  • Change of Ship’s name
  • Change of Ship Owner
  • Change of Ship Register Owner
  • Change of radio equipment
  • Loss of certificate

Long Range Identification and Tracking
LRIT has been incorporated into the International Convention on Safety of Life at Sea 1974 (SOLAS) as amended under the chapter on “Safety of Navigation”, Regulation 19-1. Ships must report their position to the EU LRIT data center four (4) times per day. Applicable Circulars are Circular 19/2008 and Circular 13/2009.

The Regulation applies to the following ship types engaged in international voyages:
  • All passenger ships including high speed craft
  • Cargo ships, including high speed craft of 300 gross tonnage and upwards, and
  • Mobile offshore drilling units
Ships operating in Sea Areas A1, A2, A3 and A4 must be fitted with compliant shipborne equipment, while ships operating exclusively within coastal Sea Area A1 and fitted with an Automatic Identification System (AIS) are exempted.

Approved Application Service Providers (ASPs) issuing Conformance Test Report (CTR) Certificates for Cyprus flag ships can be found here.

Once a CTR is issued a copy must be forwarded to the email address lrit@dms.gov.cy; also all communication and requests to be addressed to the same address.

In case of a waiver is needed to be issued for LRIT, applicable information is appended in Circular 16/2022 – all requests to be addressed to shipsafety@dms.gov.cy using the relevant form.


Updating the Shipping Deputy Ministry when the power to the LRIT is disrupted / switched off or when a Cyprus flag vessel is at a location of low coverage
The Shipping Deputy Ministry advises that when a Cyprus flag vessel:
I. Is due for dry docking / repairs / lay up – disruption of power to the LRIT or when the vessel will be located at an area of low coverage or when vessel will lower the antenna of the LRIT when passing through bridges etc
(a) The master or the management company or the owner will have to send an email notification to the LRIT Unit informing of the details of the vessel (name and IMO) and
(b) Reason of the power disruption / low coverage issues and duration of such conditions {dates to be provided}.
II. Is due to resume operations and sails at open sea after all of the above is completed and the power to the LRIT terminal is restored / coverage issues are not affecting the signal strength, a notification will have to be submitted.
